In the eastern part of Nagano Prefecture the town of Karuizawa is located about 1000 meter above sea level, which makes it a resort to escape the summer heat.
This was first discovered by Alexander Croft Shaw a British missionary, who in 1886 built a summer house here. After him many others followed and the continuous growth since made Karuizawa into a national and also international health retreat.
